bioactive_microbial_metabolites

Chemical structures of short chain fatty acids and indole-containing compounds that are produced by microbes in the gastrointestinal tract. Upper left, butyrate; center, indole-3-acetaldehyde; upper right, indole; lower right, propionate; lower left, indole-3-propionic acid. The short chain fatty acids (butyrate and propionate) come from the fermentation of digestible fiber by certain bacteria. The indole-containing molecules come from the metabolism of tryptophan by certain bacteria. Structures are from PubChem, compilation by Nancy R. Gough, BioSerendipity.
