IgG antibodies are core components that combat infection. These antibodies are produced by B cells a few weeks after the first exposure to a pathogen and then are produced rapidly in response to subsequent exposure to the same pathogen. Vaccines induce the production of antibodies, and IgG antibodies are a key to achieving long-term immunity. Antibodies are not only endogenous pathogen-fighting proteins, but these are also used therapeutically to treat many diseases and conditions.
